《憤怒的葡萄》以經(jīng)濟(jì)危機(jī)時(shí)期中部各州農(nóng)民破產(chǎn)、逃荒和斗爭為背景。俄克拉何馬和鄰近的得克薩斯、堪薩斯、阿肯色各州的農(nóng)民負(fù)債累累，土地被大公司沒收，無家可歸，只得向西遷移，想在加利福尼亞州尋找出路?！稇嵟钠咸选芬约s德一家為代表，記敘了他們一家十二口從俄克拉荷馬州向加利福尼亞州逃荒的艱難經(jīng)歷。他們將家中的一切變賣后，換來一輛破舊的汽車，一家坐車向西逃荒。途中年輕的諾亞和康尼則在半路上開了小差。到了加州后，一切并不像他們想像的那樣美好，等待他們的仍然是失業(yè)、饑餓和困苦。小說標(biāo)題《憤怒的葡萄》中的“憤怒”便是對導(dǎo)致人們貧困的不公的社會(huì)制度的強(qiáng)烈抗議。
